Main River Cruise: Bavarian Holidays (Mainz-Nurmberg)

To cruise the river Main is to experience quintessential Germany at its very best. The longest river located entirely in Germanywinds through the heart of the country, passing forests and vineyards as well as cosmopolitan cities and medieval towns. While it`s less well-known than the Danube or Rhine, it’s a major tributary of the latter. It weaves a glorious 530 km (330 miles) route from the lush valleys of the German Highlands to romantic Bavaria, passing some of the most picturesque medieval towns in the country before it reaches historic Mainz.

You will see a truly picture-postcard landscape: beautiful dense forests, valleys with rolling vineyards, ancient hilltop castles and quaint rustic villages with traditional half-timbered houses are waiting for you along the banks of this magical river. A cruise on the beautiful River Main promises the quintessential German experience.

Today you'll have the opportunity to explore Würzburg, a resplendent city that is home to a magnificent Baroque palace, the Residenz. That first glance whisks you back to the romantic 18th century when this part of Germany captivated writers, artists, and musicians. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the royal residence has one of Germany’s most ornate staircases, as well as decorative frescoes, priceless tapestries, sculptures, and paintings.

The Marienberg fortress perches high on a hill looking toward the opposite bank where the Würzburg Residenz ranks among the most important palaces in Europe. Würzburg’s bridges are a key feature of the cityscape and the famous Alte Mainbrücke is the perfect place to enjoy a glass of local Franconian wine from vineyards just outside the city.

No cruise of the Main river is complete without a stop in enchanting Bamberg, which is also UNESCO-listed thanks to its incredible heritage. Built by archbishops on seven hills and known as the ‘Franconian Rome’, the Bavarian town of Bamberg is simply magical. Home to so many attractions, your only task will be deciding which ones to visit. A network of canals and former fishermen’s houses make for an impressive sight (known affectionately as "Little Venice"), as does the old town hall, built on an island in the middle of the Regnitz river and flanked by a bridge at either side. From its fabulous, splendid cathedral (the resting place of Pope Clement II), to the local beer from Bamberg’s many breweries, this is a charming German town that never disappoints.

Take a guided walking tour of the former home to imperial dynasties, and see its Romanesque cathedral, Old Town Hall, and seven hills crowned with churches.
